Meet with your consultant surgeon to discuss your concerns, whether puffiness, drooping skin or visual obstruction, and decide if upper lids, lower lids, or both should be treated.
Your surgeon will explain where incisions will be placed (usually hidden in natural eyelid creases) and how excess skin, fat, or muscle will be removed or repositioned for the best outcome.
Eyelid surgery is typically a day-case procedure under local or general anaesthetic. Stitches are removed after about one week, and most bruising and swelling settle within two weeks.
Follow-up appointments monitor your healing. As swelling resolves, your eyes appear more open, refreshed, and youthful, restoring brightness to your expression.
The best candidates for blepharoplasty are patients who have no underlying eye conditions or general medical illnesses such as thyroid disease which can affect the eyelids. You may be asked to have a formal eye test at your local ophthalmologist prior to surgery. There is no ideal age to perform the surgery although the aesthetics of eyelids tend to worsen with age. Ultimately it is a matter of what feels right for you.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on either or both of the upper and lower eyelids. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. Blepharoplasty involves carefully removing excess skin, and removal or repositioning of muscle and/or fat. In some patients there may be a need for additional procedures to to optimise the outcome. Some patients choose to have all four eyelids operated on at the same time.
After the operation you should be able to go home on the same day and will be advised to sleep using a couple of pillows to keep the head up. In the early stages of the recovery you may need to use eye drops for extra lubrication. You should expect visible bruising and swelling of the eyelids in the days after surgery. Ideally you should aim to take two weeks off work, and can start light exercise after four weeks.
Blepharoplasty can have an immediate and long lasting rejuvenating effect depending on the pre-existing aging/genetics of the patient. Ancillary procedure such as a brow lift might be required in the future if there is further droopiness of the eyelid.
Complications include minor skin infection, blurred vision for a few days, swelling and bruising, asymmetry of scars and temporary difficulty closing one’s eyes during sleep. Your surgeon will carefully go through the risks and complications of the surgery during your consultation.

Incisions are carefully placed within the natural eyelid crease for upper lids and just below the lash line for lower lids, so scars are discreet and fade over time.
Most patients are comfortable resuming light activities within a week, once stitches are removed. Swelling and bruising continue to settle over the following 1–2 weeks.
