Genital Aesthetic surgery is a rapidly growing subspecialty in plastic surgery with an almost 70% increase in the number of patients requesting this type of surgery in the United Kingdom over the past few years. Aesthetic female genital surgery involves surgery on normal female external genitalia. Self-esteem and sexual identity issues linked with the external appearance of genitalia have resulted in an increased deand amongst individuals seeking corrective or rejuvenating procedures.

Who is suitable?

Female patients who have concerns about the appearance or function of their external genitalia are suitable for surgery. The main areas of complaint are classified as: discomfort with sports or clothing, labial entrapment with sexual intercourse, perceived enlarged or asymmetrical labia, genital changes due to child bearing or as a result of obstetric injury.

What areas can be treated?

The purpose of this surgery is to improve function and appearance of the external genitalia where necessary.

How do I decide what I need?

At TPSG all patients will be seen by the surgeon who is going to perform the procedure. A careful medical history and examination will be carried out. All concerns are discussed and an appropriate, achievable and safe procedure will be chosen.

What does the operation involve?

The operation can be carried out under local or general anaesthesia as a day case, depending on the complexity of the case. There are many different procedures available each addressing a particular section of the external genitalia. These include: labiaplasty (reducing the size of labia and improving symmetry), vaginoplasty (vaginal tightening), hymenoplasty (repairing the hymen) and clitoroplasty (operations on the clitoris) .The incisions are sutured with absorbable sutures and appropriate dressing is applied.

Labiaplasty – Labiaplasty is the most commonly performed genital cosmetic procedure. Labiaplasty in essence refers to any procedure performed to improve the appearance of the labia. This may include reduction of labia minora or majora (inner and outer ‘lips’ of the vaginal opening), as well as augmentation with fat transfers to address age related atrophy (flattening and sagging of the labia majora). The reduction involves removing a segment of the labia.

Vaginoplasty – Vaginal laxity is a common complaint amongst women who have had children, and women report reduced sexual sensation as the most common symptom. A vaginoplasty involves removing a segment of the vaginal wall in order to “tighten” the tubular shape of the vagina.

Hymenoplasty – The hymen is a thin curtain-like structure that partially covers the entrance to the vagina. The operation involves surgical tailoring of the hymen remnants with absorbable sutures to narrow the entrance.

Clitoroplasty – Clitoroplasty includes reduction of the clitoral hood to expose the clitoris more, clitoropexy or lifting the clitoris and clitoral reduction. This may be done to improve appearance or sexual sensation.

What happens after the operation?

Normally patients go home the same day after the operation. They are encouraged to mobilise after the operation, discomfort permitting. Patients can expect to be off work and driving for 2-4 weeks. Full recovery takes from 4-6 weeks, sexual and sporting activities can resume after 6 weeks.

How long do the results last?

The benefits of a vaginoplasty and labial reduction can last a life time.

What are the risks?

As with any cosmetic surgery, there are some risks associated with the surgery. Complications include minor wound infection, wound dehiscence and vaginal bleeding. At TPSG, utmost care and attention is paid to every detail of the surgical journey to ensure the risk of any complication is absolutely minimised.
